The Confucius Institute at Tel Aviv University
The Confucius Institute at Tel-Aviv University (CITAU) is the result of fruitful cooperative work of Tel-Aviv University and the Chinese National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (Hanban). Our institute like dozens of Confucius Institutes in the world serves to enhance the studying of Chinese language and culture. In addition, CITAU encourages the academic research of diverse aspects of Chinese civilization and history. Our Institute provides various courses in Chinese language for general public and regularly arranges concerts, lectures, exhibitions and performances, featuring wonderful and multifaceted Chinese culture. In order to stimulate sinological research, CITAU organizes scientific conferences and provides scholarships and awards for the excellent students.
The first of the two main fields of CITAU’s activity is the Israeli general public. CITAU’s purpose here is to introduce and popularize Chinese cultural values and language. The second main area is Tel-Aviv University, where, with close collaboration of East Asian Studies Department, CITAU promotes various educational programs and academic researches dedicated to China.
Besides, the Institute initiates Israeli elementary, middle and high schools’ pupils into Chinese language and culture by means of lessons and hobby groups, providing schools with professional teachers and necessary teaching materials.
CITAU also cooperates with the School of Education at Tel-Aviv University in the program of Chinese Teaching Certificate.
The current Head of the Confucius Institute at Tel-Aviv University is Dr. Asaf Goldschmidt, following Dr. Ori Sella. The members of the Institute’s administration are the founding director of the S. Daniel Abraham Center for International and Regional Studies Professor Raanan Rein and the Pro- Rector of Tel-Aviv University Professor Aron Shai.
